Historically there have been two versions of baccarat that have been more popular at land casinos. Unfortunately they cannot be structured for online play. This article looks at Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque.

Chemin de Fer is the land casino baccarat variant that finds place in many of the earlier James Bond movies. In this game the bettors play against each other with the casino taking a rake, as in poker cash games. To start with, the highest bidder gets the Banker position and takes on the responsibility of the house with all other bettors playing against him. He also acts as the dealer and deals the cards for the Banker hand and the Player hand. All the other bettors have to wager on the Player hand. The bettor who wagers the highest amount plays the hand of the Player. The bettor in the Banker position plays the Banker hand. In Chemin de Fer the third cards are not taken based on predetermined rules as in online baccarat. The bettors playing the two hands can exercise options.

If the Banker hand wins then the bettor who is playing the banker collects all the bets. If the Player hand wins then he pays out all bets at even money. The bettor who has bid for the Banker position continues playing the banker until he loses a hand. He may also voluntarily relinquish the position. The Banker position moves around the table as per the rules of the casino. It is usually clockwise or counter clockwise. Because the bettors play against each other and hold the bank in turns, Chemin de Fer cannot be played at online casinos.

In Baccarat Banque the bettors play against the house, but there are other issues preventing online play. There is one Banker position and two Player positions. The casino plays the Banker position as per fixed rules. The two Player positions are played by two of the bettors who exercise options for taking the third card. The remaining bettors can wager on one of the two Player positions but not on the Banker position. Each Player hand is independently matched against the Banker hand and payouts made as required. In Baccarat Banque because two bettors are required to play simultaneously it is not possible to play this baccarat variant at online casinos.
