Wan Doy Pairs Poker is a casino poker game developed by the software provider WagerWorks and offered at online casinos like Virgin Casino. It is interesting because it is different from other casino poker games in a major respect. Wan Doy Pairs Poker revolves around a seven card hand with a different set of hand rankings. The individual cards are ranked as in poker. The hand rankings in descending order are four of a kind and three of a kind, four of a kind and pair, three of a kind and three of a kind, three of a kind and two pairs, four of a kind, three pairs, three of a kind and pair, three of a kind, two pairs and one pair. All other hands are referred to as “no hand” and are at the bottom of the ranking. Like other online casino poker variants, Wan Doy Pairs Poker is played with a single standard deck of 52 cards, which is shuffled before every deal.
The game starts with the player placing ante and bonus bets of the same amount. The player can also place an optional jackpot bet before the cards are dealt. Then the player is dealt seven cards face up and the dealer is dealt seven cards face down. The player’s cards are automatically arranged into the highest possible hand ranking and displayed. The player has to decide whether to call or fold. If the player decides to call then he must place a call bet that is equal to the ante bet. If the player decides to fold then he will lose the ante and the bonus bets. The jackpot bet, if placed, will stand even if the player folds.
If the player calls then the dealer’s hand is displayed and both hands are compared as per the above mentioned hand rankings. If the player’s hand is higher ranked then he is paid even money on the ante and the call bets. If the player’s hand is lower ranked then the ante and the call bets lose. If both hands are of the same rank then the ante and the call bets push. The payouts for the bonus bet are as follows. If the player has a three of a kind or higher ranked hand then the bonus bet pays out as per the bonus bet payout table, even if the player loses or ties the main bet. If the player has less than three of a kind hand and the player’s hand wins then the bonus bet pushes. In all other cases the bonus bet loses. The payouts for the jackpot bet are as follows. If either the player’s hand or the dealer’s hand are ranked three pairs or higher, then the jackpot bet pays out as per the jackpot bet payout table. If both hands qualify then payouts are made for both hands separately.
The house edge for the main game in Wan Doy Pairs Poker is about 2%. This house edge is greater than that for blackjack games and less than that for European Roulette. Based on this if players decide to wager on Wan Doy Pairs Poker, then the optimum strategy is to call if dealt any pair or higher. The house edge of the jackpot bet is over 7% and this bet is not worth placing one’s money on.
